Tennis Phenom Sloane Stephens Thought She Was 'Off The Record' When She Trashed Serena Williams

sloane stephens

In ESPN The Magazine's May issue, Marin Cogan profiled the young tennis phenom Sloane Stephens.

Stephens absolutely trashes Williams in the interview, saying Williams hadn't spoken to her since they played (and Serena lost) at the Australian Open. The story went viral and ended with the two allegedly patching things up.

Now, Stephens told Sports Illustrated she is "really disappointed in the lady [Cogan] who wrote it" because she thought they were off the record. Stephens said of her interview with Cogan:

"We were eating pizza! I understood the fact that those things weren’t going to be written in the article and I was just saying whatever. The person who wrote it just kind of took that and ran with it. That’s what they’re going to do."

But Cogan said it was very clear that the conversation the two were having was on the record. In an email to SI Cogan wrote:

“When I sat down with Sloane and her mother at the pizza place, I asked — as I always do with my interview subjects — ‘Do you mind if I record this? I just want to make sure I don’t miss any quotes.’ And she said she didn’t mind. After the tape recorder started rolling, we had lunch and I conducted the interview. She discussed Serena throughout the lunch (not before) ...

“At no point during our time together or afterward did Sloane say anything was off the record; nor did she ever express any confusion at any point about the interview. Personally, I appreciated that she was so refreshingly honest in it.”

It has basically come down to he said, she said, at this point but Stephens says she is going to be more careful from this point on when she is being interviewed.

We're still waiting for that Williams-Stephens match up at the French Open.

Kyle Love, starting defensive tackle for the Patriots, was cut from the team yesterday after the Patriots learned of his diabetes diagnosis, according to NFL.com.

Love started in 11 games in the 2012-2013 season and prior to the season, the Patriots gave Love a two-year contract extension with a $500,000 signing bonus.

Love's agent, Richard Kopelman, was not happy with the Patriots' decision and told Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston:

"Naturally, we are disappointed that the Patriots decided to part ways with Kyle, especially in light of the fact that a number of elite, professional athletes with diabetes -- both Type 1, which is known to be far more difficult to manage than Type 2 diabetes -- have had very successful careers in professional football, hockey, baseball and basketball."

The Patriots said they are concerned about not knowing what Love's recovery time would be.

Kopelman expects Love will be able to participate in a training camp at the end of July.

Chad Johnson (formerly Ochocinco) is going to jail for 30 days after a Florida judge did not accept his plea bargain for a recent probation violation for his domestic violence case, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Johnson reportedly playfully patted his lawyer on the bum during the hearing and the judge was not amused.

Here's the account of what happened in the court room from TMZ:

"During the hearing, the judge and Chad's lawyer were about to finalize the terms of Chad's punishment -- terms that were pretty favorable to Chad.

But the whole thing fell apart at the last minute, when the judge asked Chad if he was satisfied with his attorney -- and the ex-NFL star reached back and playfully slapped his lawyer's a**.

Chad smiled ... the court erupted with laughter .... but the judge wasn't amused."

After a 15 minute break in court, Johnson apologized for the joke and said his "life is in shambles right now." But the judge didn't change her decision and sentenced Johnson to 30 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to violating his probation.

The NFL's New 'No Purses' Rule Is Alienating Women

$

falcons female fan

Starting this preseason, no one is allowed to bring a purse or a diaper bag into an NFL stadium thanks to a new safety rule.

Here's what you'll be allowed to bring into the stadium:

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12.” (Official NFL team logo clear plastic tote bags are available through club merchandise outlets or at nflshop.com), or
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).
  • Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the stadium with one of the clear plastic bag options.
  • An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm obviously all for anything that makes stadiums safer, but this is ridiculous, and obviously affects women, and people with children the most.

As a woman, there is no way I can fit the contents of my purse into a "small clutch bag approximately the size of a hand." In all honesty there's no way my phone would even fit in that, let alone my wallet, keys, chapstick, and a few other things girls need. These rules also mean diaper bags won't be allowed which are essential for families bringing kids to the game for obvious reasons.

As Chris Chase points out on For the Win, if someone wanted, they could still hide something in a clear plastic bag, so these theoretically would still have to be searched. So why can't I just bring my purse? I have no problem waiting in a line so my purse can be searched.

Probably because the NFL wants me to buy a "clear plastic tote bag" from its website, which they are promoting within the rule. We're assuming they mean this. It's ugly.

Women like going to football games too NFL, could ya help us out a little?

Chad Ochocinco Is Reportedly Losing $46,000 A Month

Chad Johnson (Ochocinco) was sentenced to 30 days in jail last week after he goofed around in the court room at a hearing for violating his probation from a previous domestic violence case. Johnson apologized to the judge for his actions, and he was released from jail today, according to the Miami Herald.

But that doesn't mean everything is going well for the former NFL player. TMZ is reporting that Johnson is losing $45,982 every month.

TMZ obtained documents from April showing Johnson only makes about $3,000 a month, and between $16,000 in child support and his other expenses, he's reportedly losing tons of money every month.

The document says Johnson's expenses include (from TMZ):

"Johnson forks over $9,063.24 in mortgage payments, $2,500 for food, $2,650 on car expenses, $3,500 on clothing, $250 for grooming, $5,000 on entertainment, $1,000 for pet expenses along with various other expenses that total $31,154.76."

If Johnson doesn't get picked up by an NFL team this year, he's going to have to seriously think about cutting back on his lavish lifestyle. He could start by selling his crazy aquarium bed.

Serena Williams Apologizes For Her Insensitive Steubenville Rape Comment

serena williams

There's a great profile of Serena Williams in the July issue of Rolling Stone that is online now. But one quote from her interview stuck out as particularly insensitive about the rape case in Steubenville.

Today, Williams released a statement on her blog apologizing for her insensitivity. In the statement Williams says she is currently reaching out to the family of the young victim for a personal apology as well:

“What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened. For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved – that of the rape victim and of the accused. I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.

I have fought all of my career for women’s equality, women’s equal rights, respect in their fields – anything I could do to support women I have done. My prayers and support always goes out to the rape victim. In this case, most especially, to an innocent sixteen year old child.”

Here's what Williams said during her Rolling Stone interview:

"Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don't know. I'm not blaming the girl, but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don't take drinks from other people. She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky. Obviously I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond are currently serving time in a juvenile detention center in Ohio. The two were convicted of rape.
